WINDSOR, Ont. - The Laurier Golden Hawks pushed their winning streak to eleven games with a 3-0 shutout of the Windsor Lancers on Saturday night at the Capri Pizzeria Recreation Complex. The victory keeps Laurier alone atop the OUA standings, making them the first team this season to reach the 50-point mark.Â
Between the pipes, Kayla Renaud turned aside all 25 shots she faced to earn her ninth career shutout.Â
Laurier managed to strike in every frame, opening the scoring just seven minutes into the first period when Elle Spencer beat Windsor goaltender Rebecca Noble with a tight-angle shot. Â
The Golden Hawks then doubled their lead midway through the second frame after forcing a turnover along the end boards. Rookie Zoey Dupuis was quick to jump on the loose puck in the crease and bury the rebound for her second career goal.Â
Windsor really started to push back in the middle period, testing Renaud during her busiest stretch of the night. Â
"We knew they're a team that pushes the pace both ways and creates a lot offensively," said Laurier's manager of women's hockey operations and head coach, Kelly Paton. "In the second, Kayla really kept us in it, making some saves in key moments. We were better organized in the third, and scoring a goal in every period certainly helped."Â
Late in the third, trailing by two, Windsor called a timeout and pulled their goaltender for the extra attacker. Laurier broke out of their zone under pressure, allowing Ella Jackson to send a saucer pass to Spencer, who sealed the win with an empty-net goal for her second of the night and 12th of the season. Â
At the other end of the ice, Noble also faced heavy traffic throughout the game as Laurier fired 38 shots her way. Â
"We had some good looks and built momentum off quality shot attempts," Paton added. "When we can get our shot total closer to 40, we feel pretty good about it."Â
The Golden Hawks will return home for the first time in four games, hosting the Toronto Varsity Blues in a morning school-day matchup at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex on Thursday.Â
"It's a big week coming up," Paton said. "Both home games are special events, and we're facing top-three teams [Toronto and Waterloo]. The competition will be there, but overall it'll be nice to come home, settle back in and play on our ice."Â
