This Golden Hawks National Rankings Update is presented by Westpoint Sports

RICHMOND HILL, Ont. -- The Golden Hawks started the season right where they left off.

After a thrilling 33-28 win over the Guelph Gryphons, Laurier has been listed at #2 nationally in the first U SPORTS football rankings of the season.

It is the highest positioning to start the season since 2005.

Western (#4), Queen's (#6), and Guelph (#7) round out the OUA schools named to the top 10. Other conference schools receiving votes were Ottawa, Toronto, and York.

The defending Vanier Cup champion Laval Rouge et Or sit on top after their first week bye.

U SPORTS uses the Elo rating system to calculate its weekly national rankings. Elo calculates team rankings on a game-by-game basis, using an algorithm that generates a statistical calculation based on certain customized variables adapted across the range of U SPORTS team sports.

The Top 10 in football is generated by a combination of Elo rankings and a media poll, each component worth 50 percent of the final total.
