TORONTO, Ont. - After three days of exciting racing, the U SPORTS swimming championships officially closed on Saturday night at the Athletic Varsity Pool in Toronto.
During the preliminary session of day three, Owen Jibb raced in the 200m butterfly to a new personal best time of 2:06.88.
Next up was Kent Goni Avila, who first raced the 50m breaststroke, where he finished 10th overall, qualifying him for the B final. Then he swam the 100m freestyle and finished 22nd overall, which would qualify him for the C final, but he elected to scratch the event to focus on the Laurier relay that night.
At the final session, there was excitement in the air. Not only was it the last night of racing, but it was also the night Laurier's men would hit the water in the 4x100m medley relay.
The graduation walk started the night when graduating swimmers walked across the bulkhead one last time. Laurier had two swimmers participate: Goni Avila and Kelton Langman.
The only individual event of the night was Goni Avila's 50m breaststroke, where he finished ninth overall in a new team record and personal best time of 27.87.
Then came the moment Laurier Swimming fans had been waiting for, the last event of the night. In the 4x100m medley relay, the Hawks' time from OUAs seeded them 13th overall but they were looking to improve that ranking.
First in the water was Will Bryer swimming the 100m backstroke. Bryer kept Laurier close to the leaders and set a new personal best time of 57.13.
Second was John Ryan, who swam the 100m breaststroke leg. Ryan charged through the water, finishing in the fastest 100m breaststroke relay split in Laurier history with a 1:01.81.
Third was Langman. In his first 50m, he swam a blistering 24.92 - the fastest 50m butterfly he had ever swam - and kept charging over the last 50m, touching the wall in a total time of 55.07, which was the fastest 100m fly relay split in Laurier history.
Then came Goni Avila. Laurier was about seven metres behind the leaders, but that was close enough for Goni Avila to chase them down. Goni Avila's 100m time was 47.99 - the fastest relay split in Laurier history.
The Hawks touched the wall second in their heat in a new team record time of 3:42.00, which would have finished second at this year's OUA Championships.
Overall, the Hawks' relay finished ninth above teams like McMaster (10) and Waterloo (11), which was also their best result in a men's relay in 25 years.
After the race, the Hawks were all smiles.
"I enjoyed cheering on my teammates all weekend but it was even more special being able to swim with them on the relay," Langman said.
After completing the final race of his U SPORTS career, Goni Avila reflected on his last time in the water representing the purple and gold.
We swam something faster than OUA's, so we can't complain about the result," he said. "I want to thank my teammates for making this happen, thank Kaitlin the athletic trainer for keeping us healthy. Thanks, Ryan and Kate for coming out and supporting the team. Last but not least, thanks to Cathy our head coach for preparing us for this meet and doing a phenomenal job coaching us at this meet."
Over the three-day competition, Laurier earned 108 points. Goni Avila earned 70, Jibb earned 18, and the relay earned 20 points.
