MARKHAM, Ont. - The Golden Hawks swim team finished a successful OUA championship at the Pan Am Center in Markham.
The meet's highlights included Katie Cosgriffe setting two S10 World Records in the 100m backstroke and the 200m butterfly.
Abby Marshall led the women's team in points, earning 15 individual points.
The men were led by Kent Goni Avila who earned 2 medals and 62.5 points for the Hawks.
The men also qualified for the 4x100m medley relay for USPORTS, marking the first time Laurier's men have had a relay at USPORTS since 2000.
As a team, the women moved up one position from last year while the men maintained their fifth-place spot.
DAY ONE
The first day of the championship saw a flock of Hawks advance to the finals.
The first event was the 4x50m freestyle relay in which Laurier's women consisting of Olivia Francis, Simrit Grewal, Marshall and Morgan Pequin raced to a new team record and a sixth-place finish.
Laurier's men also finished sixth overall thanks to a strong effort from Tyler Greenwood, Griffin Oldman, Owen Jibb and Daniel Romagnoli.
Jacob Wahba was the first Golden Hawk to swim an individual final, racing to 16th place in the 200m freestyle.
Next was the women's 100m breaststroke where Marshall soared to a 12th place finish overall. On the men's side in the 'B' final John Ryan and Dylan Thomas finished ninth and 13th overall. While Goni Avila raced to a fourth-place finish in the 'A' final.
After that Francis Soared to a new personal best in the 100m butterfly and finished 12th overall. On the men's side, Kelton Langman raced to a 16th-place finish.
In the women's 50m backstroke, the Hawks were dominant in the 'B' final with Emma Young, Simrit Grewal, and Alyse Borges finishing close together from 13th to 15th. Greenwood and Will Bryer raced for the men and finished ninth and 14th, respectively.
The 400 IM was the last individual event of the night and Owen Jibb Soared to a 4th place finish beating his team record in the event.
The last event of the night was the 4x100m medley relay, the women earned a seventh-place spot thanks to the efforts of Young, Marshall, Cosgriffe, and Grewal.
Before the 4x100m medley relay, there was anticipation in the air as the team of Bryer, Ryan, Langman and Goni Avila raced for a spot at USPORTS and did not disappoint.
Racing to a fifth-place finish, team record and USPORTS qualification in the event, marking the first time since 2000 that Laurier's men are sending a relay to USPORTS.
DAY TWO
By the start of finals on day 2 the Hawks had already qualified more swimmers for finals than they had the year prior which helped the team keep Soaring. The first event of the night was the 50m freestyle, in which Francis finished 15th overall.
The next event was the 200m breaststroke, where the Golden Trio of Olivia Frost, Marshall and Maxeen Mullen finished 11th, 12th and 16th respectively.
On the men's side, Ryan swam the 'B' final and finished 11th overall. While Jibb raced in the 'A' final and charged to an 8th-place finish.
The next event saw another Golden Trio as Grewal, Cosgriffe, and Young raced in the 100m backstroke to 12th, 13th and 16th respectively, while Greenwood represented the Hawks in the 'A' final and finished 7th overall.
The 'B' final of the men's 200 IM saw Bryer finish 12th overall, while the 'A' final had the U SPORTS-qualified duo of Jibb and Goni Avila.
Jibb finished 8th overall while Goni Avila not only broke the team record but also became the first male Golden Hawk to win an event at the OUA championship since 2007 when David Hughes won the 1500m freestyle.
The last individual event of the night was the 50m butterfly which saw Goni Avila dive right back in after just finishing his 200m IM and finish 8th overall.
The relay of the night was the 4x200m freestyle relay, Katarina Brezovan, Megan Smith, Kaitlin Couillard and Katie Marton Soared to a 6th place finish.
Oldman, Dylan Thomas, Langman and Jibb raced the 4x200m freestyle relay and finished fifth overall in team record time.
DAY THREE
The Golden Hawk women got the day started with the 4x50m freestyle relay which finished 8th overall thanks to Young, Frost, Cosgriffe, and Borges' strong effort. The men finished ninth overall with Connor Cartier, Ryan, Daniel Romagnoli, and Thomas battling hard competition.
Francis was the lone Hawk in the 100m freestyle racing to a 14th-place finish.
The women's 50m breaststroke saw the duo of Marshall and Frost raced to a 12th and 14th place finish overall.
On the men's side Ryan and Thomas raced in the 'B' final to 10th and 14th place finishes. While Goni Avila Soared in the 'A' final touching the wall in a tie for second place in the event.
The final individual event of the night was the 200m backstroke where Bryer raced hard and won the 'B' final for the Hawks.
The last event of the meet was the 4x100m freestyle relay the team of Pequin, Marshall, Grewal, and Francis finished 6th overall just off the team record while Greenwood, Oldman, Bryer, and Goni Avila soared to fourth place and a new team record.
The team was happy with this result but disappointed that the three-year run of medalling in the 4x100m freestyle was snapped.
