GUELPH, Ont. The Laurier Golden Hawks track and field sprint group, along with select middle-distance runners, opened the indoor season Saturday at the Tenke Classic in Guelph, marking the team's first competition after nearly 2½ months of training.
With positions on the Golden Hawks' short sprints roster at stake, competition was intense, particularly in the men's 60 metres, where 17 Laurier student-athletes were entered. Declan DiFrangia led the way, winning the event in 6.97 seconds.
Logan Couto followed in 7.03, with Kymani Allen (7.08), Divine Ilesanmi (7.13) and Sise Aroloye (7.20) rounding out the top five Laurier finishers.
Seven Golden Hawks competed in the women's 60 metres. Abby Byers captured the win in 7.90 seconds, while Neve Rye placed second in 8.16. Sarah McKie completed the top three with a time of 8.31.
In the women's 600 metres, Laurier's Ciahan Malone and Anisha Sabree produced strong early-season performances, finishing fourth and fifth, respectively. Malone posted a time of 1:39.40, followed closely by Sabree in 1:40.20.
The Laurier Golden Hawks return to competition at the 50th Annual Bob Vigars Meet on November 29 in London. The event will be hosted by the Western Mustangs at Thompson Arena.
