OSHAWA, Ont. - The Golden Hawks stretched their winning streak to three games with another road victory, edging the Ridgebacks 2-1 on Thursday night.Â
"It was a special event game tonight that Ontario Tech was hosting, an event to celebrate girls and women in sport, which we're always happy to participate in," said Laurier's manager of women's hockey operations and head coach Kelly Paton. Â
"We had a few more bums in the seats, which was exciting. I think it helped with a little bit of the fan atmosphere and certainly drove some energy for them early on."Â
After a scoreless opening frame, Laurier broke through midway through the second on the power play. Ella Jackson's shot took an odd bounce straight up into the air over goaltender Zoe McGee, and Jersie Lindley – positioned at the back door – showed excellent hand-eye coordination to bat the puck down and across the goal line to put Laurier ahead.Â
Later in the period, the Golden Hawks struggled to clear their zone and were caught on a long shift. Although Sarah Howell stopped the initial chance, the rebound landed right on the stick of Julia Jackson, who tapped it into an open net to tie the game.Â
Deadlocked for most of the third, Laurier finally found the go-ahead marker when Haley Murphy carried the puck into the zone and sent a seemingly routine shot from the blue line toward the net. Expecting a deflection, she instead watched it slide cleanly under McGee's pad for her first OUA goal.Â
"It's really exciting and is something we try to celebrate internally," Paton added. "We know the importance of getting some of our first years feeling like they can add value to that area of the game."Â
While the Ridgebacks put heavy pressure in the final minutes, the Golden Hawks held firm to secure the win.Â
"It's been nice to figure out how to win consistently in regulation, and obviously we're walking into a weekend off," Paton said. Â
"It's a chance for the team to reset and enjoy a couple of days away from the rink before closing out the first half of the season next week with two games, including a special event game in Woodstock."Â
The Golden Hawks return home on November 28 to host the Brock Badgers, with puck drop set for 7:00 p.m., and tickets are available here. Â
