OTTAWA, Ont. - The Golden Hawks swim team started their season strong by winning the men's, women's, and combined titles against both Carleton and Queen's University on Saturday, with the men's team winning all but one event. Â
The first event was the 4x50m medley relay which the Golden Hawks dominated. The women's 'A' relay won the event, while the men's 'A' and 'B' relays went one-two in the event. Â
In the 400m freestyle, first-year Addison Card finished second overall in the event on the women's side, while the men finished first to fifth in the order of George Radic, Ben Flint, Liam Telky, Angus Charland, and Sawyer Kay. Â
The 200m breaststroke was a strong event for the Hawks with Olivia Frost and Eadaoin McGrath touching the wall in second and third overall. The men finished first and third in the event, with John Ryan winning and Brandon Brock followed, and Daniel Romagnoli was not far behind. Â
The backstroke dominance seen last year was back in full force for the Golden Hawks in the 50m event, with Simrit Grewal, Emma Young, and Morgan Pequin taking the podium spots. On the men's side, first-year Carson Pyzer won the event with fellow first-year Andy Jiang in third and Connor Cartier in fifth.Â
Megan Smith and Olivia Williams kept the momentum going in the 200m butterfly finishing second and third, respectively. This was the only event of the meet the men did not win, with Tyler Greenwood, Jacob Wahba and Caleb Johnston touching the wall in second, third, and fourth. Â
Card found herself back on the podium in the 200m freestyle, winning the event with Hannah Thompson close behind in second and Katarina Brezovan in fourth. The men won all the podium spots again with Owen Jibb in first, Griffin Oldman second, and Callum MacGregor third. Â
The 100m IM saw no Laurier swimmers in the top five on the women's side, but Bella Ste. Marie touched the wall eighth overall. On the men's side, Radic won his second event with Greenwood and Romagnoli in fourth and fifth, respectively.Â
The 100m butterfly was golden as the women and men both went one-two in the event. Olivia Francis and McGrath sat first and second for the women, and William Bryer and Jiang on the men's side with Johnston touching the wall in fourth. Â
Kaite Marton was the lone Golden Hawk on the women's 100 breaststroke podium with a third-place finish, while Ryan and Brock finished one-two once again with Dylan Murray close behind in fifth. Â
Francis was golden again in the 100m freestyle with Pequin right behind in second. Oldman also found the podium again with MacGregor in second and Wahba in fourth. Â
The 50m butterfly was the second event of the day to have no Laurier swimmers in the top five with Alex Lett in sixth and Marton seventh. On the men's side, first-year Flint won the event while Romagnoli placed fourth. Â
Grewal came second overall in the 100m backstroke and Young was close by in fourth. Jibb and Bryer finished one-two for the Hawks and were the only two swimmers to finish the race in less than a minute. Â
McGrath and Ste. Marie kept the team's unbeaten streak alive by going one-two in the 200m IM with Lett close behind in fourth. The men took the top spots from first to fourth with Jiang, Brock, Wahba and Kay beating the competition. Â
Francis claimed gold in the 50m freestyle, while Oldman, MacGregor and Bryer came first through third on the men's side. Â
The Golden Hawks kept the win streak going in the 200m backstroke where Ste. Marie and Grewal went one-two and Danica Penner came fifth. Jibb, Pyzer, Greenwood, and Cartier finished first to fourth for the men.Â
The win streak was finally snapped in the 50m breaststroke, but Frost was able to find points for the Hawks with a fourth-place finish. Right after Ryan officially swept the breaststroke events for the men winning the 50m, 100m, and 200m races. Â
The last race of the meet was the 4x50m freestyle relay. The women's 'A' relay won the event in an electric heat, finishing in 1:52.63.
