Laurier football finishes #1 in final U SPORTS rankings

This Golden Hawks National Rankings Update is presented by Westpoint Sports

RICHMOND HILL, Ont. - The Golden Hawks have soared above the rest.

The nation's three other conferences were in action wrapping up their respective regular seasons, but no one could dethrone the Golden Hawks despite the first-round playoff bye.

For the first time in program history, and since 1998 when national rankings were tracked, the Golden Hawks finish the season as the number one team in the country.

There was plenty of movement in the final rankings. Previously number three Western dropped to eighth after their shocking quarterfinal upset by Guelph, who were left off the rankings but received votes.

Queen's moved up two spots to sixth and earned themselves a spot in the semifinals, defeating McMaster 46-10 in the quarterfinals.

Windsor stayed put at number nine, and their season continues after a 31-24 win over Ottawa, who also received votes. Windsor and Queen's will meet in the OUA semifinals, while Laurier faces Guelph.

U SPORTS uses the Elo rating system to calculate its weekly national rankings. Elo calculates team rankings on a game-by-game basis, using an algorithm that generates a statistical calculation based on certain customized variables adapted across the range of U SPORTS team sports.

The Top 10 in football is generated by a combination of Elo rankings and a media poll, each component worth 50 percent of the final total.
