WATERLOO, Ont. - The Golden Hawks returned to Waterloo to host the Brock Badgers for the second half of a back-to-back. Looking to extend their perfect start to the season, Laurier completed a thrilling 3–2 comeback in overtime to secure their sixth straight win.Â
It's the team's best start since 1993 when the Golden Hawks won eight in a row to begin their season.
Â
The opening frame saw a slower, shakier start from the Golden Hawks, as Brock struck twice in quick succession.
Stephen Calisti opened the scoring on the power play, firing into an open cage after goaltender Tristian Malboeuf was caught on the lateral movement.
Less than two minutes later, Zack Stringer doubled the Badgers' lead when his shot took an odd bounce into the back of the net.
Â
Laurier began to turn the tide in the second period.
Caleb Petrie received a drop pass in the slot and wasted no time sniping it top shelf to cut the deficit in half.
The Golden Hawks found the equalizer late in the frame when
Thomas Lenart buried a loose puck at the back door, tying the game heading into the third and erasing the two-goal deficit.
Â
A scoreless third period followed, with both teams trading quality chances, sending Laurier to their first overtime of the season.
Â
Just seconds into the extra frame,
Bryce Sutherland scooped up a loose puck in the neutral zone off the opening face-off, danced past a Brock defender, and tucked home the game-winner – his third goal of the weekend.
Â
Malboeuf was sharp in net, stopping 35 of 37 shots, while the Golden Hawks fired 41 the other way.
Â
Laurier will look to continue their unbeaten streak and push to a 7–0 record when they host the Guelph Gryphons (2–2–1) at the Athletic Complex. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
