This Golden Hawks National Rankings Update is presented by Westpoint Sports
RICHMOND HILL, Ont. - The Golden Hawks wrapped up the regular season as the only unbeaten team.
For the first time in program history, and since 1998 when national rankings were tracked, the Golden Hawks finish the season as the number one team in the country.
This all comes after the Golden Hawks handed the Western Mustangs their first regular season home loss since 2014, and Laurier's first regular season win at Western since 2005.
The Golden Hawks won by a score of 60-13, making the 47-point difference the largest margin of victory over Western in Laurier football's program history.
Laurier also finishes with back-to-back 8-0 seasons since 2004-05.
There was some movement in this week's rankings. The Mustangs, previously second, fell to third, being overtaken by Laval. Windsor moved up to ninth, taking the spot of Bishop's who fell out of the top 10 completely. Finally, Queen's stayed put at number eight.
Ottawa, McMaster, and Guelph were the other conference schools to receive votes.
U SPORTS uses the Elo rating system to calculate its weekly national rankings. Elo calculates team rankings on a game-by-game basis, using an algorithm that generates a statistical calculation based on certain customized variables adapted across the range of U SPORTS team sports.
The Top 10 in football is generated by a combination of Elo rankings and a media poll, each component worth 50 percent of the final total.
Also receiving votes: Manitoba (11), Ottawa (3), McGill (2), Bishop's (1), McMaster (1), Guelph (1).
