LONDON, Ont. - Laurier's indoor track and field team travelled to Thompson Arena in London for the 49th Annual Bob Vigars Season Opener.Â
Some of the team's middle-distance, jumpers, and sprinters produced strong results with a few work-in-progress finishes.
Two jumpers led the way with stand-out numbers.Â
Ben Calconi won the men's triple jump competition with a jump of 13.28 and broke the program record. Â
Markeiths Flannigan jumped to a new personal best and school record, clearing 1.90 metres in the high jump.
Declan Di Frangia kept his excellent early season going with a second-place finish in the 60 metres in a time of 6.97. Â
In the 300 metres,
Justice Sewitt led the team with a great early season effort of 37.27 for third place. Â
Right behind in fourth and fifth were
Finn Moore and
Fabian Cox. Â
On the women's sprint side, coaches were impressed with
Abby Byers in the individual 200 metres and an excellent leg in the relay where she was clocked in 25.6 for her 200 m leg.
Alyssa Zinn and
Nolan Kuhlberg ran excellent early season races in the 1,000-metre. Zinn clocked in at 3:06.59 and Kuhlberg crossed the line in 2:36.28. Â
Additionally, the team had strong results in the 600-metre event, with
Chloe Poulter and
Anisah Sabree running neck and neck to finish in times of 1:41.52 and 1:42.52. Â
Chad Thorpe ran well for his first 600-metre indoors ever to clock in at 1:28.52
Of special note,
Marie Mazzoli was Laurier's top 3,000-metre racer, running in her last race as a Golden Hawk as she heads back to Belgium for the conclusion of her exchange in the business program this term.
Laurier will travel to the Dennis Fairall Fieldhouse in Windsor to begin the new year, as they will compete at the Can Am Classic from January 10-11.
