ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – The Golden Hawk swim team just wrapped up an excellent performance at the 2024 Dean Boles Divisional Championship.
The championship, named after former Laurier swimming head coach Dean Boles, consists of six teams which include Laurier, Brock, Guelph, Queen's, Carleton, and York.
The highlights included three new Canadian Para records and seven new fastest program times, on record, along with the team finishing second overall in combined score.
Day One
The first event was the 4x50m freestyle relay. The 'A' relay of
Peyton Croteau,
Morgan Pequin,
Simrit Grewal, and
Olivia Francis finished second overall in new team record time besting the previous record from the WLU Varsity Invitational. Laurier's 'B' relay came seventh overall.
The men's 'A' relay of
Tyler Greenwood,
Daniel Romagnoli,
William Bryer, and
Kent Goni Avila was inspired by the women's 'A' and also soared to a new team record and a first-place finish overall, while the 'B' relay raced to a sixth-place finish.
The 400m IM was the first individual event of the day which saw
Maxeen Mullen, Katie Marton, and
Aleesha Tejani all get points for the Hawks with their fifth, sixth and eighth place finishes.
Owen Jibb became the Hawks first Divisional Champion of the meet with his first-place finish in the 400 IM. While
Sawyer Kay had the most impressive swim of his career, ending fifth overall and dropping over 17 seconds from his previous personal best.
Dylan Thomas rounded out the top eight while
Dylan Murray (13
th) and
Brandon Brock (14
th) also got points for the Hawks.
The Hawks made up almost half of the top 16 finishes in the 50m backstroke as
Emma Young, Croteau, Grewal and
Alyse Borges finished fourth, sixth, seventh and eighth respectively.
Katie Cosgriffe finished ninth overall setting a new Canadian Para record in the process.
Pequin (12
th) and
Tara Tavoularis (14
th) also earned points for the Hawks.
The Hawks were golden again when Goni Avila finish first in team record time breaking the previous record from 2020. While Greenwood also reached the podium in third. Bryer also earned big points for the Hawks in sixth.
In the 200m freestyle, Francis and
Katarina Brezovan raced for the Hawks finishing in fourth and tenth overall.
Jacob Wahba found the podium in third-place with
Griffin Oldman and
Cezar Hirsescu not far behind in sixth and eighth, respectively.
Cosgriffe became the first women to reach the podium in an individual event for the Golden Hawks with a third-place finish and new Canadian Para Record in the 100m butterfly. Tejani and
Megan Smith were close behind in sixth and seventh. Marton (11
th)
and Croteau (15
th) also put points on the board.
Kelton Langman and Romagnoli battled it out in the 100m butterfly earning Langman a third-place finish and Romagonli a fourth-place finish overall while
Nolan Pittman (13
th) and Marty Konecny (15
th) chased down their competition.
The 100m breaststroke saw
Abby Marshall finish fourth overall with
Olivia Frost (10
th) and Mullen (11
th) close behind in an incredibly strong field. On the men's side Goni Avila and
John Ryan Soared onto the podium in first and third place overall.
The Dylan duo of
Dylan Thomas and
Dylan Murray finished fourth and seventh respectively. Brock 10
th), Oldman (13
th), and
Andrew Zab (14
th), all earned points for the Hawks.
In the 200m back, Grewal broke into the top eight with a seventh-place finish. While Young was close by in ninth.
Kaitlin Couillard (14
th) and Tavoularis (15
th) successfully raced into points for the Hawks.
The 200m backstroke is one of the Hawks weaker events but Bryer delivered a third-place finish for the team while butterfly specialist Pittman took a stab at the race and finished 15
th overall.
The last sprint event of the night was the 50m freestyle which saw Francis become a team record holder as she tied Britney Shaw's record from 2010. Francis and Pequin finished close together in fourth and fifth overall. While Croteau was close behind in 11
th.
Greenwood, Ryan and Oldman raced on the men's side to seventh, ninth and 11
th place respectively.
Finally, it was time for the distance events, the 800m freestyle for women and the 1500m freestyle for men.
In the 800m Brezovan, Smith and Couillard finished eighth, ninth and tenth overall. In the 1500m Jibb and Wahba reached the podium in second and third. While Kay, Hirsescu and Langman were close behind in fourth, seventh, and 12
th overall.
Day Two
The Hawks got the ball rolling with the 4x50m medley relay. The women's 'A' relay finished third while the 'B' finished eighth. The men's 'A' relay finished fourth while the 'B' finished seventh overall.
The 200m IM saw a Flock of Hawks earn points as Grewal finish sixth, Mullen eighth, Cosgriffe tenth, Marton 13
th and Tejani 14
th.
On the men's side the purple and gold dominated the podium as Goni Avila finished first, Jibb finished second, and Bryer finished third in a close race.
Goni Avila also set a new team record in the 200m IM breaking his previous record set last year. Zab (12
th) and Hirsescu (14
th) also earned points for the Golden Hawks.
The 100m free saw Francis, Pequin and Young get points for the Hawks with their fourth, eighth, and 14
th place finishes. Oldman and Romagnoli finished seventh and ninth on the men's side.
Smith reached the podium with a third-place finish in the 200m butterfly. While Marton and Tejani were close behind in sixth and eighth. Greenwood was Golden on the men's side as he won the event in the fastest time on record for the team.
Langman, Kay and Wahba finished close together in seventh, ninth and tenth. While Konecny (16
th) also got points for the Hawks.
The 200m breaststroke was full of Hawks as Marshall and Mullen finished fifth and sixth with Frost close by in tenth.
Bailey Breitkreutz – 12
th and
Montana Geris – 14
th also earned points. Jibb and Thomas Soared past the competition with a one-two finish for the Hawks.
Ryan was close behind in fourth. While Murray finished eighth, Brock tenth, Zab (12
th), and
Liam Connolly (14
th).
Grewal reached her first individual divisional podium in the 100m backstroke with a third-place finish. While Young and Borges were close behind in sixth and seventh. While Couillard (12
th), Pequin (15
th), and Tavoularis (16
th) got points on the board for the Hawks.
On the men's side Bryer found his third individual podium of the meet with a third-place finish in the 100m backstroke. While Greenwood was close behind in sixth.
Next was the 50m butterfly were Francis and Croteau finished in fifth and eighth respectively. Cosgriffe finished 11
th overall and set her third Canadian Para record of the meet.
On the men's side, Langman and Romagnoli both earned points for the Hawks with their eighth and tenth place finishes.
The Hawks Soared in the 50m breaststroke as Marshall and Frost got points on the women's side with seventh and ninth place finishes.
On the men's side, Goni Avila and Thomas finished first and third, with Goni Avila setting his third individual team record of the meet.
They were followed closely by Ryan and Murray in fourth and fifth. While Brock (14
th) also earned points for the Golden Hawks.
The last individual event of the meet was the 400m freestyle where Couillard finish ninth, Brezovan 11
th, and Smith in 12
th, while Wahba reached his third podium with a second-place finish.
Romagnoli, Kay, and Hirsescu finished fourth, sixth and seventh overall.
The 4x100m freestyle saw the women's 'A' relay finish third and the 'B' relay fifth. While the men's 'A' relay finished first overall and the 'B' relay finished fifth.
