Golden Hawks split pair of games on opening day of Far West Regional Qualifier

LONDON, Ont. - It was an up and down day for the Golden Hawks in their pursuit of qualifying for their first OUA Championships appearance since winning gold in 2019.

The day started very impressively in the team's opener against the Waterloo Warriors.

Laurier starting pitcher Max Zentil was dominant on the bump, as the hurler rang up 10 strikeouts in a 4-1 victory at Dan Pulham Field. Zentil gave up four hits and one run over seven and one-third innings while walking one.

The Golden Hawks got on the board in the first inning after Davis Llewellyn homered to right field, scoring two runs.

Max Todd took the loss for Waterloo as the hurler went six innings, giving up three runs on three hits, striking out two and walking three.

Noah Young collected the save for the purple and gold while Jordan Miller appeared in relief for Laurier Golden Hawks.

Llewellyn drove the middle of the lineup, leading Laurier with two runs batted in. The right fielder went 1-for-3 on the day.

Julian Russell went 2-for-4 at the plate while Laurier combined to steal three bases in the game.

As the visiting team in game two, Laurier were the first to get on the board in the second when Liam McTague doubled, scoring one run.

Nick Zinyk singled to help Windsor tie the game at one in the bottom of the third.

A single by Jack Marcotte gave Windsor the lead they would never relinquish, 2-1, in the bottom of the sixth.

Kimani Bailey eventually earned the win for the Lancers. In a complete game performance, Bailey gave up seven hits and one run over nine innings, striking out nine and walking four.

Gavin McLean took the loss for Laurier. The pitcher went seven and two-thirds innings, surrendering two runs (one earned) on five hits, striking out six and walking three.

Laurier will now face Western on Saturday at 10am with a trip to the Far West Regional Qualifier final on the line.
