Golden Hawks' championship run ends with silver-medal finish

WELLAND, Ont. - Laurier baseball's remarkable run through the 2026 OUA championship came up just short Sunday.

Less than 24 hours after winning three consecutive elimination games to reach their first OUA gold medal game since 2019, the Golden Hawks were shut out 2-0 by the host Brock Badgers at Welland Stadium.

Despite outhitting Brock 5-3, Laurier could not solve Badgers starter Evan Marks, who threw a complete-game shutout, striking out eight and walking none.

The game's decisive moment came in the bottom of the third inning when Gavin Taylor launched a two-run home run to left field. The blast accounted for all the offence Brock would need in a tightly contested pitchers' duel.

Laurier starter Gavin McLean turned in another strong outing after throwing a complete game in Saturday's opening elimination win over Queen's. The right-hander limited Brock to three hits over 6 1/3 innings, allowing two runs while striking out two and walking three.

The Golden Hawks' pitching staff continued the form that carried them through the tournament, holding the Badgers to just three hits and turning a double play behind McLean.

Offensively, Laurier generated opportunities but was unable to deliver the timely hit needed to erase the deficit.

While the loss denied Laurier its fourth OUA championship and first since capturing back-to-back titles in 2018 and 2019, the Golden Hawks put together one of the tournament's most memorable runs.

After opening the championship with a heartbreaking 5-4 loss to Carleton on Friday, Laurier responded by winning three elimination games Saturday, defeating Queen's, Waterloo and the defending champion Toronto Varsity Blues to earn a place in the gold medal game.

For Brock, the victory secured the program's first OUA championship since 2014 and the fifth provincial title in school history.

Laurier's season is far from over, however. The Golden Hawks will now shift their attention to the Canadian University Baseball Championship in Ottawa, Ont., from October 22 to 26, where they will open tournament play against the Queen's Gaels.

It will mark Laurier's first appearance at nationals since 2019, when the Golden Hawks advanced to the championship game before falling to the Guelph Gryphons.
