Laurier rugby pick up first win of the season over Western

LONDON, Ont. - In a fiercely contested rugby clash, the Laurier Golden Hawks demonstrated their mettle by locking down a hard-fought 22-14 victory over the Western Mustangs at Alumni Field on Saturday. The win extends Laurier's  string of success in this rivalry, securing their sixth win in their last seven tilts against the Mustangs.

The echoes of last season's defeat still resonated as the Golden Hawks sought redemption on enemy turf. Western had secured a rare victory against Laurier in Waterloo, marking their first triumph over the Golden Hawks since 2016.

Laurier's Wyatt Brown and Ethan Voskamp provided the offensive output the Golden Hawks needed, with each contributing crucial plays instrumental in the victory. Brown's try showcased his tenacity while Voskamp's impact was equally significant, notching a try of his own and displaying his kicking accuracy with a pair of conversions and a successful penalty kick.

The Golden Hawks would hold firm against Western's relentless assaults, showcasing their resilience. With the win, Laurier's record for the season now stands at 1-1, signaling a promising start to their campaign.

Looking forward, the Golden Hawks will face another formidable adversary as they travel to take on the Queen's Gaels next Saturday. The match promises to be a high-stakes encounter, following Laurier's memorable upset of the powerhouse Gaels in last season's OUA semi-final.
