WATERLOO, Ont. -
Patrick Brown scored the lone goal for the Laurier Golden Hawks as they opened up their preseason with a 4-1 loss to the Windsor Lancers.
A nice backdoor pass allowed the Lancers to open the scoring with just under three minutes remaining in the first period.
Both teams went zero for two on the man advantage in the second period. Rookie
Ventsislav Shingarov looked comfortable in between the pipes, coming up with some big stops to keep the Golden Hawks within one through two periods.
Windsor would find a hole under Shingarov's glove early in the third to make the score 2-0.
Brown cut the lead in half with a beautiful shorthanded effort that began with first-year defenseman Jaden Reimer.
Windsor scored their third goal of the game on a breakaway chance and put home an empty netter for their final goal of the night.
When asked about his thoughts on the game, Laurier's Manager of Men's Hockey Operations & Head Coach
Kevin Forrest said, "I thought it was a good first game. I saw a lot of good things to be excited about. I am also excited that there are a lot of mistakes out there that allow for some teaching moments because it's a young group."
Laurier is in an unfamiliar position this year, boasting a recruiting class of twelve players and a goalie, but Forrest is unfazed due to past experience.
"This is similar to my first year in Brock when we had a recruiting class of fourteen guys. It puts a bunch of guys together who are going to be together for the next four years and gives you a good base to build from."
"But just because we're a young team doesn't mean we're out of the picture. The beauty of our league is that anybody can beat anybody on any given night regardless of who's better on paper. We're going to go game by game and if we win enough of them we'll have some fun in the playoffs and try to upset some people."
The Golden Hawks are back on ice at the Waterloo Memorial Complex on Wednesday September 20th where they take on the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks. The puck drop is at 7:00 p.m
