Shootout thriller extends Laurier's winning streak to seven

WATERLOO, Ont. - The Golden Hawks hosted the Brock Badgers on Friday night at SunLife Financial Arena. This matchup marked the Golden Hawks' first encounter with the Badgers since their home opener, where they lost 1-0. It remains the Golden Hawks' only loss in the 2023-2024 regular season.

Both teams hit the ice strong, but it was the Brock Badgers who were first on the scoreboard.

The Badgers took advantage of the first powerplay of the game when Madelyn Walsh found a way to get the puck passed Laurier's goalie, Acadia Carlson, making it 1-0 early in the first period.

Hayley Szymanowski had a beautiful shot on goal later in the first but couldn't find her way past Badgers goaltender Kenzie Harmison.

The purple and gold had a few more chances on the Badgers' second penalty of the period but couldn't get one on the scoreboard.

The Golden Hawks began the second period down by a goal but hustled to try and even the score. Walsh took a holding penalty halfway through the period to give the Golden Hawks the powerplay. Just twenty seconds later, the birthday girl, Brianna Bowman took a shot from the point which was finally tapped in by Yasmina Tomkin to tie the game.

The third period was a battle for the win, as the puck was carried up and down the ice. Both teams had several chances to take the lead, however, the Badgers found their way to the back of the net on the power play.

In the final two minutes of the game, Brock took two penalties, providing the Golden Hawks with a power play advantage. The Golden Hawks then pulled their goalie to make it six-on-three in the final minutes.

With thirteen seconds remaining, Olivia MacMillan found her way through the traffic and got the puck to the back of the Badgers net, pushing this game into overtime.

Overtime consisted of a penalty for each team, but no goals, forcing this game into a shootout.

The first shooter for the Golden Hawks, Sophia Lombardo, scored the game winning goal, while Acadia Carlson shut down every chance for the Badgers shooters. The Golden Hawks won the game, 3-2.

The Golden Hawks are now 7-1 on the season and remain in first place of the OUA West division.
