Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey | | Abby Robertson

Winning streak snapped by visiting Gaels

WATERLOO, Ont. - After a dramatic shootout win on home ice against the Brock Badgers less than 24 hours earlier, the Golden Hawks were looking for a home weekend sweep with the Queen's Gaels in town on Saturday night.

Instead, Queen's got some revenge for a home loss dealt to them by the Golden Hawks back in October, snapping Laurier's seven-game winning streak in a 5-2 victory.

As soon as both teams hit the ice at the Waterloo Rec Complex, it was apparent that the Golden Hawks did not have the same energy as the Gaels.

The home side took two penalties halfway through the starting period, giving Queen's the five-on-three advantage, which they capitalized on to open the scoring.

The Gaels took a penalty with thirty seconds left in the first period, giving the Golden Hawks the power play. Claire Robinson took a shot from the point, which was tapped in by Elle Spencer with fourteen seconds remaining.

Although the Golden Hawks tied it up at the end of the period, the Gaels outshot the Hawks 18-6 in the first twenty minutes of regulation.

Halfway through the second, the Gaels broke the tie by sneaking the puck past Kayla Renaud.

The Gaels put their foot on the pedal and increased their lead to 5-1 with three goals in a 1:16 span.

With a few seconds left, the Gaels took their second tripping penalty. While many anticipated the Golden Hawks to enter the final frame on a power play, Laurier showcased their proficiency by scoring a goal with only one second remaining.

Heading into the third period, the Golden Hawks switched out their goalies, putting Acadia Carlson in to replace Kayla Renaud. Renaud left the game with 30 saves.

Carlson, however, was not in net for long as the Golden Hawks pulled their goalie with just under six minutes left in the third.

The Golden Hawks had many good chances late in the period but could not find a way to put one past Gaels goalie Emma Tennant.

With just their second loss, the Golden Hawks are now 7-2 and sit second in the OUA West division - a point behind leaders Guelph.
