Golden Hawks remain atop OUA West standings with shootout win over Mustangs

WATERLOO, Ont. - The Laurier Golden Hawks took on the Western Mustangs in their first game back at SunLife Financial Arena since their home opener.

After coming off a road trip where they won all three games, the Golden Hawks were looking to continue the winning streak against the Mustangs back home, which they successfully did in their sixth round in a shootout. It's the program's first four-game winning streak since 2015.

The game was an even battle right from the start, with both the Golden Hawks and the Mustangs fighting to take the lead. The Golden Hawks took a couple penalties in the first period, giving the Mustangs a few scoring chances on the powerplay. However, the Golden Hawks held strong against the pressure and had a few scoring opportunities themselves while killing the penalties. Acadia Carlson, Laurier's goaltender, made some huge saves on the penalty kill, saving the Golden Hawks from giving up an early lead.

Both teams had many opportunities to be the first on the scoreboard, however, the game was scoreless after the first.

The purple and gold entered the second period dominating, forcing the play to stay in the Mustang's zone for the majority of the period. The Mustangs took several penalties during the frame, giving the Golden Hawks a chance at the lead. Although Laurier fought hard during their powerplays; they couldn't find the back of the net. As neither team has secured a goal yet this game, they enter the third frame tied 0-0.

Going into the third period scoreless, both teams continued to battle hard. The third period showed an increase in intensity as both teams fought for the win. However, the third period, like the first two, ended in a tie.

In overtime,  the play moved between ends. Both teams had many chances, including the Mustangs hitting the crossbar with a minute left, however, nobody could find the game winning goal.

Both goalies held their own during the shootout. It was Laurier's sixth shooter Eryn Wolfe who slipped it passed Western goalie Ella Brabrook to win the game.

Laurier is now 4-1 in their season and hold onto the first-place spot in the Western division. They're currently tied
