WATERLOO, Ont. - In one of the best Laurier football seasons in recent memory, Laurier football's offensive leader has rewritten the record books.
En route to leading his team to a 7-1 regular season record and the second-highest points total in the OUA, Golden Hawks quarterback
Taylor Elgersma set a new benchmark in multiple passing categories.
His 2,641 passing yards set a new Laurier single-season record previously held by legendary Golden Hawks pivot and Vanier Cup champion Bill Kubas, who posted 2,295 in 1994.
Elgersma compiled that total by becoming the first Laurier QB on record to complete over 200 passes (206, to be exact), breaking Shane Kelly's previous mark of 177 set in 2011.
The cherry on top for the third-year kinesiology & physical education major is setting a new single-season OUA completion percentage record of 75.2%. That mark is higher than the previous tally set by former Waterloo Warriors quarterback Tre Ford in 2018.
Reflecting on his achievements, the native of London, Ont. deflected praise to his teammates.
"The personal accolades are great but, ultimately, it's a team game and the guys have been out there (all season) making plays for me. We've got a great team ... and I'm thankful for them," he said.
Elgersma and the Golden Hawks will be back in action on Saturday October 28 at 1pm as they begin postseason play with a Battle of Waterloo quarterfinal match-up against the Waterloo Warriors.Â
