GUELPH, Ont. - Laurier's women's basketball team was back in action Wednesday night against the Guelph Gryphons for their first matchup of the season. Though Laurier was able to keep it close in the first quarter, Guelph started pulling away, winning the game 101-56.
In the first quarter, both teams were very efficient from the field, shooting over 50%. However, Guelph was able to jump out to a nine-point lead due to their success at getting to the line. At the end of the first, Laurier was able to keep it to a single-digit game, down 26-17.
In the second, Guelph began to pull away, starting the quarter on an 8-0 run. The Hawks maintained the pressure with
Cassidy Hirtle sinking three shots from beyond the arc, however, this was not enough for Laurier to keep it to a single-digit deficit. Guelph pulled out to a 49-30 lead going into halftime.
The rest of the game was all Guelph as they continued their momentum, outsourcing Laurier 52-26 in the second half. The Gryphons just could not miss in the third quarter, shooting 60% from the field to Lauriers 21%.
Guelph also dominated the glass, resulting in 18 second-chance points to Lauriers four.
Finally, Guelph was able to capitalize on turnovers, scoring 31 points on turnovers while the Hawks only converted six points off of Guelph's 19 turnovers.
With this loss, Laurier dropped to 4-9 on the season but still hold the final playoff spot in their division.
