WHOCK blanked in Windsor by Lancers

WINDSOR, Ont. – In the first game of a back-to-back against the Windsor Lancers this weekend, Laurier's women's hockey team fell 3-0 to their divisional foe.

The first period proved that both teams had very tight defensive gaps, making scoring opportunities minimal on both ends.

A power play for the Lancers provided them with some solid scoring opportunities, but they weren't able to get the puck past Laurier goaltender Cohen Myers, who made some outstanding saves.

Shortly after, the Hawks were granted a power play of their own and fired multiple shots at Lancers goaltender Kristen Swiatochik, who was equal to her counterpart in being up to the task.

The first frame ended with a pair of zeroes on the scoreboard.

The Lancers came out flying in the second, putting extreme pressure on Myers who made additional high calibre saves to keep the score tied. Paige McArthur was able to open the scoring and give the Lancers a 1-0 lead with just under 13 minutes to go in the second though.

There was an evident shift in momentum after the game's opening goal, as the Lancers found multiple break-out opportunities and held the puck in the Hawks' end for the majority of the period.

Laurier had a couple of power-plays but wasn't able to find the back of the net, thanks to a continued solid performance by Swiatochik in the Lancers goal.

The Lancers found themselves with a two-man advantage nearing the end of the second, but the Hawks effectively killed off both penalties and kept the score 1-0.

Starting the third period with a power-play, the Hawks hoped to tie up the game and make a comeback in the final frame. Despite their efforts, the Lancers were able to kill off the penalty and hold onto their one-goal lead.

Laurier continued to fight but ran out of steam as the Lancers dominated the third period. Myers made some diving saves that kept Laurier in the game and gave them the motivation to keep going.

With just over four minutes remaining in the game, the Golden Hawks make a bold move and pulled Myers to gain an extra attacker. After countless attempts throughout the game, Maggi DeWolf-Russ took advantage of the empty net and pocketed a goal, securing a 2-0 lead for the Lancers.

Just when everyone thought the action was over for the night, Mia DiNardo followed her teammate's lead and scored another empty-net goal. The Lancers skate away with a 3-0 victory against the Golden Hawks, outshooting them 27 to 20.
