WINDSOR, Ont. – Laurier's women's hockey team fell 3-2 to the Windsor Lancers in a hard-fought battle that ended in overtime on Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Hawks had Victoria Kelaiditis starting in net for her first game this season, with regular starter getting the day off with the team's second game in less than 24 hours.
There were lots of opportunities at either end, but both goaltenders were up to the task, keeping the score tied at zero after the first period of play.
The second period started with the Golden Hawks creating a lot of chances for themselves, but they were not able to get the puck on target. The intensity rose as time moved along and both teams were eager to open the scoring.
With just under eight minutes to go in the second period, Kenedy Choma would indeed score the first goal of the game on a power-play off a pass from Sophia Lombardo.
Lancer's goalie, Holly Borrett made fantastic back-to-back saves shortly thereafter though, keeping the Lancers in the game while Laurier brought the heat.
With only 2:54 left in the second period during a 4-on-4, Paige McArthur scored off a pass from Elissa Benjamin to tie up the game.
In a mere 27 seconds, the Lancers utilized their momentum with Jessica Gribbon scoring off a pass from Aubrey Lefler, giving Windsor a 2-1 lead to finish the second period.
The puck stayed in Laurier's end for the first half of the third period. The Hawks were able to create a few breakout opportunities but could not manage to get the puck past Borrett.
The Lancers ramped up the intensity even further during the second half of the third period. Laurier's defense did a good job of boxing out the Lancer's offense and keep the puck away from the net.
With exactly three minutes to go, Laurier's Christina McCulloch scored her first OUA career goal off a pass from Kenedy Choma.
Finishing the third period tied at two, the game headed into overtime. Kelaiditis ultimately kept the Hawks in the game for the short overtime that was played. Maggi DeWolf-Russ scored just 1:39 into the extra period, giving the Lancers a 3-2 win to finish off the action-filled game.
The Lancers outshot the Golden Hawks 40-17.
