WHOCK lose rematch against Mustangs in London

LONDON, Ont. – Just four days since their road win at Western, Laurier's women's hockey team were back in London looking for back-to-back wins for the first time this season. Unfortunately, they skated off the ice at Thompson Arena defeated 4-2 by the Mustangs.

The first period began with high energy from the Golden Hawks, coming off their second win of the season Laurier did an excellent job putting on the pressure in the Mustangs' end and holding it in their zone for most of the period.

With eight minutes to go in the first, Arielle MacDonald scored her first career OUA career goal just a few steps inside the blue line with an assist from Kenedy Choma.

To begin the second period, Western granted the Hawks a four-minute power-play, which turned into multiple scoring opportunities. They were not able to get one past the Mustangs' goaltender, Kaitlyn Booth though.

Laurier almost immediately returned the favour, giving the Mustangs' a four-minute power play and then a two-man advantage shortly thereafter. The Hawks were able to kill off both penalties and maintain their 1-0 lead.

With just four minutes to go in the second, Madison Beishuizen tied it up for the Mustangs. Less than a minute following Western's first goal, Sam Wood scored another for the Mustangs, giving the home side a 2-1 lead.

To further solidify their lead, less than a minute later Alyssa Wouda made it 3-1, scoring off a pass from Grace Bellamy.

The third period began with a lot less intensity than the first and second. Laurier's goalie, Cohen Myers made some excellent saves, keeping the Hawks in the game. MacDonald had countless attempts, helping to keep the intensity level high.

With less than two minutes to go, the Hawks pulled Myers for the extra attacker but Sam Wood took advantage of the empty-net opportunity to score her second goal of the game to make it 4-1 for the Mustangs.

Just when it appeared that the action was over, MacDonald followed Wood's lead, scoring her second of the game with less than a minute to go.

Despite the late goal and Laurier out-shooting the Mustangs 36-34, the deficit was too much for the Golden Hawks to overcome.

With the win, the Mustangs moved into fourth place in the OUA West division, ahead of the Windsor Lancers.
