WHOCK shut out Western in London

WATERLOO, Ont. – Laurier's women's hockey team faced the Western Mustangs for the first time this season on Saturday afternoon and came away with a 2-0 win.

The Hawks left London with the victory, having scored a pair of goals in the second period and dominating the ice throughout the game.

The first period was an early indicator of Laurier's momentum coming into this game. Goaltender Cohen Myers made some excellent saves while Emily Visser also won most of her face-offs and had multiple scoring chances.

Mustangs goaltender Kaitlyn Booth (Oakville, Ont.) saved many shots fired at her by the Golden Hawks and kept the score tied at zero.

Following a Laurier powerplay late in the first, the energy shifted towards the purple and gold, showing promise for the second period.

In the second period, the Hawks scored 32 seconds into the frame. Olivia MacMillan opened the scoring off a pass from Kaitlin Saxton to give Laurier a 1-0 lead.

For the remainder of the second period, penalty minutes increased as things got heated and the Mustangs fought hard to stay in the game.

Despite this, Laurier was able to keep the puck in Western's end for the majority of the period, effectively killing off penalties and taking advantage of powerplay opportunities.

Booth was once again outstanding in keeping the Mustangs in the game and shutting down multiple Laurier attempts. Finishing off the period the same way they started it, Kenedy Choma got her stick on a slap shot from Kaitlin Saxton during a power-play with only 1:23 remaining in the period.

Laurier finished off the second period with a 2-0 lead that they would not relinquish.

The third period was more evenly matched, with the Mustangs outshooting the Hawks 10-7. It had no impact, seeing as Cohen Myers repeatedly shut down shot attempts and gave the Mustangs no chance for a comeback.

Penalty minutes continued to climb as the Mustangs fought hard to spoil Myers' shutout. As Laurier continued to dominate the ice, the Mustangs pulled their goalie in a last resort attempt to turn things around - but to no avail.

The Hawks skated away with their second victory and Myers' second shutout of the season.
