Heartbreak for Laurier in Lakers' last-second victory

NORTH BAY, Ont. - Laurier's women's basketball team was back in action Friday night against the Nipissing Lakers aiming to get within a game of the .500 mark.

Despite history being on their side, with not having lost to the Lakers since 2015 (a span of seven games), the Golden Hawks saw that streak snapped by a 58-56 score on a last-second Lakers layup.

Laurier struggled to start the game with Nipissing out-scoring the Golden Hawks 22-10. The visitors shot just 20% from the field while Nipissing started at a 48% clip. Despite a rough quarter for the visitors, the second provided a bit of a bounce back.

Laurier limited the Lakers to eight points despite only replicating their own points total from the previous frame, making it a 10-point game going into the half. Rookie Brittyn Graves led the team in scoring in the first half, recording eight of her team's 20 points. She would eventually finish with a tie for the team-high on the night with 12.

The offence began to flow in the second half as Laurier out-scored Nipissing 19-10. Laurier also limited their turnovers while forcing six from the Lakers. Miranda Campbell led the team offensively in the third, recording eight points on 3 for 5 shooting.

With how they controlled the third quarter, Laurier started the fourth down by just one.

The fourth saw several lead changes as Laurier shot 54% percent from the field and 40% from three.

Laurier even clawed all the way back to hold a two-point lead with 1:11 to go. The Lakers erased that advantage though by closing out the night with a game-tying jumper from Megan McCarter and getting the winning lay-up from Sawyer Fischer with just 0.3 seconds left.
