LONDON, Ont. -
Colin Campbell scored his second goal of the game with two minutes remaining in overtime as the Laurier Golden Hawks defeated the Western Mustangs 4-3 on Saturday night for their second win of the season.
Â
The ice was still wet when Western's Jake Murray scored their first goal on a two-on-one just 31 seconds into the opening frame.
Â
Laurier's first goal would also come on a two-on-one.
Patrick Brown sent the puck under the stick of a Western defender to
Caleb Rich, who put the puck past Western's Dylan Myskiw to tie the game at one.
Â
Western's Franco Sproviero scored just over a minute later on a powerplay to regain their lead.
Â
Laurier responded with pressure but the second half of the opening frame remained scoreless and the Golden Hawks headed into the second facing a one-goal deficit.
Â
Laurier's
Grayden Gottschalk had an opportunity to tie the game on a cross-crease pass early in the second but was stoned by Myskiw.
Â
With just under five minutes left in the period, Brown picked up the puck with speed in Western's zone and released a shot that zipped past Myskiw's blocker.
Â
Laurier's penalty kill was two for two and
Christian Propp stopped all 14 shots sent his way in the second period.
Â
Western took a penalty late in the second, so Laurier began the third period on the man advantage. Unfortunately, they weren't able to capitalize.
Just after the penalty expired, Eric Van Impe beat Propp high, breaking the tie and putting Western back in front.
Â
Myskiw robbed
Matt McJannet on a Laurier powerplay midway through the third. Myskiw slid across the net getting to the other side just in time to deny the game-tying goal with the paddle of his stick.
Â
Laurier would strike on the powerplay late in the third when James Thompson drew a Western player into taking an undisciplined double-minor penalty.
Â
Laurier defenseman
Colin Campbell scored his first career OUA goal on the ensuing powerplay to tie the game at three, sending the game into extra minutes.
Â
Much of the overtime was a puck possession game, with each team waiting for their opponent to make a crucial mistake. Brown had a breakaway chance to win the game but Myskiw came up big and shut him down, while also shutting down Gottschalk on the rebound.
Â
Campbell secured the Golden Hawks' win late into the extra frame after he caught a pass from
Sam Rhodes and fired a shot over the blocker-side shoulder of Myskiw.
Â
Propp put on a strong performance, saving 35 of the 38 shots he faced in his first win of the season.
