Laurier defeat Guelph for third win in four games

WATERLOO, Ont. - Colin Campbell scored the game-winning goal in the third period as the Laurier Golden Hawks topped the Guelph Gryphons 3-2 on Friday night for their first regulation win of the season.

Grayden Gottschalk broke the ice on the powerplay a minute and a half into the game after he redirected a pass from Sam Rhodes past Guelph's Nate McDonald. Gottschalk's first of the campaign marked the first time Laurier has opened the scoring this season.

Just seconds later, Laurier's James Thompson received a double-minor penalty for kneeing. On the ensuing four-minute penalty kill, Laurier held Guelph to minimal scoring chances.

Guelph's Ethan Doyle tied the game on a man advantage with just over five minutes left in the opening frame.

Laurier's special teams spent the majority of the first period on the ice, as they were called upon seven times, going one for three on the powerplay and three for four on the penalty kill.

The second period was quiet compared to the first. Guelph's Jacob Winterton broke the tie though on a wrap-around attempt that took a bad bounce off of Laurier goaltender Christan Propp.

In the dying seconds of the second frame, Chase Herrfort sent a pass to a wide-open Patrick Brown, who unleashed a slapshot that beat McDonald.

Laurier almost broke the tie on a dump-in that took an awkward bounce off the end boards and went behind McDonald but not across the goal line.

Just over halfway through the third, Evan Benwell made a backhand pass to a streaking Colin Campbell, sending him in on a breakaway. Campbell, fending off a back checker, went to his backhand for his third goal in two games.

Laurier held off Guelph for the remainder of the night and went home with their third win in their last four games.

"They're doing a lot of things better, and we're starting to see the results," said Laurier's Interim Head Coach and Manager of Men's Hockey Operations Kevin Forrest when asked about his team's recent success. "It helps with their belief and their confidence."

The Golden Hawks have a quick turnaround as they travel to Toronto to take on the TMU Bold at 2:15 p.m. on Saturday, November 12. Catch all the action live on OUA.tv
