WATERLOO, Ont. – It took an 18-shooter shootout to determine a winner in Friday's women's hockey game, but it was the Brock Badgers skating away with a 2-1 win over the Golden Hawks.
The first period came and went as Laurier and Brock were quick with their passes and end-to-end opportunities. The purple and gold killed off a two-minute penalty as Acadia Carlson stood tall to ensure the period finished scoreless.
The second started well for the purple and gold as Chloe Davidson got her first goal of the season to put the Golden Hawks on the board. After a scramble in front of the net, Davidson squeaked the puck past Badgers goalie Tiffany Hsu to take the lead.Â
The Badgers got one back in a similar scramble in front of Acadia Carlson just over a minute later, though. After a shot from the point, Camie Matteau Rushbrook got her stick behind Carlson to put the puck over the goal line to tie it up.Â
The remainder of the period was scoreless, but Badgers defender Kaitlyn Colonna took a four-minute penalty with 1:38 left, leading them into the third with 2:21 left on their powerplay.
The Golden Hawks couldn't capitalize, despite outshooting the Badgers 11-8 in the last twenty minutes of regulation time. After 60 minutes, the score remained the same as both teams prepared themselves for a seven-minute, three-on-three overtime.
The extra frame began with the Golden Hawks hoping to secure another quick goal and end the game there. However, this was not the case. Manager of Hockey Operations and Head Coach Kelly Paton noted there were a total of "nine girls that played great minutes in that seven-minute pocket". The game ultimately needed a shootout, which was the first for the Golden Hawks this season.
The shootout went for nine rounds and 18 shots on goal before one got past one of the goaltenders. The Golden Hawks began with Rylee Crego and she was followed by eight other shooters.Â
The Badgers began their shootout with Mishayla Christensen. She was followed by seven shooters. When her name was called a second time, she made no mistake in scoring the game-winner.
It was an intense, high-energy game for the Golden Hawks, which almost saw them secure their first win. Paton noted that she was proud of the work her team put in throughout the game, particularly Acadia Carlson, who "did a great job in the shootout". Â
Three Stars
