WATERLOO, Ont. -
Chayse Herrfort scored the overtime winner Saturday afternoon at Sunlife Financial Arena as the Laurier Golden Hawks overcame a three-goal deficit to remain undefeated against the Guelph Gryphons this season.
Guelph's Nolan Degurse opened the scoring from behind the net by banking the puck off of
Christian Propp for his third goal of the season.
Third-year forward
Nick Giunta walked out from behind Guelph's goal and ripped a shot to score his second of the season, bringing the game back to even less than a minute after Guelph opened the scoring.
Guelph's Nathan Allenson helped the Gryphons retake the lead with under two minutes to go in the opening frame. Anthony Tabak scored the lone goal in the second and Emmett Gordon extended the Guelph lead to 4-1 halfway through the third period.
With five minutes to go in the period,
Tyler Davis jammed home his first OUA goal, bringing Laurier back within two.
Sullivan Sparkes picked up an assist on the goal, extending his point streak to five games.
Just as things were beginning to turn around for the Golden Hawks, they found themselves on the wrong end of a power-play.
Despite that, just fifteen seconds into the penalty kill,
James Thomson's shot was kicked away by Guelph's Tanner Wickware and onto the stick of a wide-open
Grayden Gottschalk at the hash marks, who fired the puck past the Gryphons' goaltender.
Gottschalk struck again on special teams with less than a minute left on the clock, scoring his second goal of the night and tying the game at four on a Laurier power-play.
Patrick Brown assisted on the goal.
Laurier dominated much of the overtime. Brown had an opportunity to end the game on a breakaway attempt but was turned away by Wickware.
With just over a minute remaining in the overtime period, Laurier's
Adrian Nabuurs passed the puck to Herrfort, who fired the puck past Wickware to complete the comeback victory.
"It felt pretty good," said Herrfort when asked about his OT winner. "On a day where the boys maybe weren't our best, it was good to see the gutsy effort at the end and to come back and ultimately get the W."
"I thought we weren't playing our game for the first 55 minutes but getting that short-handed goal put a spark in the guys and woke us up," said Interim Manager of Men's Hockey Operations and Head Coach
Kevin Forrest. "They say a win is a win, but it is a little concerning how we played initially."
"(
Christian Propp) was great tonight. He kept us in there," continued Forrest. "It could have been 7-1, but he came up with some big saves. Without him, we would not have been in a position for a comeback."
Laurier's OUA all-star goaltender stopped 46 of the 50 shots that Guelph sent in his direction.
"He's our golden goose. He keeps us in games every night. I can't say enough good things about him," said Gottschalk.
With the win, the Golden Hawks are 7-3-0 in their last ten games and now boast a winning record (7-6-1) after beginning the season 0-4-1.
Laurier looks to build on their three-game win streak next weekend when they face off against the York Lions at home on Friday night.
Tickets are available for purchase to catch the game live at Sunlife Financial Arena at 7 pm. All the action will also be streamed live at OUA.tv.
