WATERLOO, Ont. - Laurier had their three-game win streak snapped at home on Saturday night, losing 3-2 to the York Lions. The Golden Hawks fell to 7-7-1 on the season and 0-2 in the season series against York.
The Golden Hawks were looking to piece together a full game after waking up from a 55-minute slumber and scoring four unanswered goals in an overtime victory last weekend against Guelph.Ā
Sullivan Sparkes opened the scoring 5:49 into the first period.
Colin Campbell broke into the York zone, circled the net and found Sparkes with a nifty back-door pass.Ā
Declan Graham picked up his first OUA goal on a rocket from the point in the second period. The defenseman now has three points in only five games on the season.Ā
Sparkes assisted on the goal, picking up his eighth point and second multi-point night during a six-game point streak.Ā
Matthew Dunsmoor got the nod in goal last night, suiting up for his second game of the season. His last game action was in Laurier's first win of the year against the Lakehead Thunderwolves.Ā
Despite waiting a month for his next opportunity, the rookie netminder returned to game form quickly and posted a .936 on the night as he stopped 33 of York's 36 shots.Ā
York scored the game-winning goal on their final power-play attempt of the night late in the third period. Laurier tried to push back and even the game but couldn't put another puck past Carter Serhyenko.Ā
The purple and gold were sent to the penalty box on four separate occasions but never saw a power-play opportunity.Ā
"Most of our penalties were penalties, but how they did not get any penalties tonight was puzzling to me for sure," said Interim Manager of Men's Hockey Operations and Head Coach
Kevin Forrest after the game.
"At the end of the day, we did not lose because of that ...Ā We didn't have our usual intensity and energy and, in the end, that's what cost us. We were average instead of very good."
The Golden Hawks look to bounce back on Saturday night when they head to Varsity Arena to take on the Toronto Varsity Blues (9-5-1) at 7:00 pm. Catch all the action live on OUA.tv
