Third period comeback spoils Laurier season-opener

WATERLOO, Ont. – Despite a 1-0 lead for the first two periods of play, the Golden Hawks fell 3-1 to the TMU Bold after a two-goal comeback and an empty-netter with only seconds left in the third period.

As Laurier entered their home-opener, goaltender Acadia Carlson made her first OUA start in her third year as a Golden Hawk. Despite the loss, Carlson made a number of great saves to keep the Golden Hawks in front through the second period.

Rylee Crego opened the scoring in the first on the Golden Hawks powerplay by pushing through the Bold zone and finishing her rush with a top-corner backhanded goal to give the Golden Hawks the early lead. A scoreless second period followed despite a powerplay opportunity for each team.

Tables turned in the third period as TMU's forward Erika Crouse tied it up with an early goal, opening the scoring for the Bold. With five minutes left in the third period, Bold defender Megan Breen received a pass from Dani Fox to put Breen in position to score on a wrist shot from the point to put TMU ahead 2-1.

Looking to tie it up with only two minutes left in the game, Manager of Women's Hockey Operations and Head Coach Kelly Paton pulled Carlson for a Laurier extra attacker. Despite their efforts, the purple and gold couldn't find the back of the net again. With only two seconds left, TMU's Tori Butler found the open cage the 3-1 final.

With this being the first game of the season, Paton noted that the five-on-five play was consistent but is hoping to improve the consistency with special teams play, as well as holding a lead going into the third period of play.
