Golden Hawks shut out by Lions on home ice

Waterloo, Ont. – Three second period goals were Laurier's undoing Saturday afternoon, as the Laurier Golden Hawks were shut out by the York Lions 4-0.

After a tough home opener loss to TMU on Thursday night, Laurier was looking to redeem themselves in their second regular season game.

The first period was scoreless with multiple opportunities for each team. The Golden Hawks looked to open the scoring during two separate powerplays, however, remained unsuccessful.

Only seven minutes into the second period, Lions forward Jennifer Saw opened the scoring on the powerplay. Four minutes later, Lions first-year student-athlete Lola Massey took a shot from the point that beat Laurier goaltender Victoria Kelaiditis to increase their lead to 2-0.

The purple and gold fought hard to get on the scoreboard but, with 14 seconds left in the third period, York's Alexa Giantsopoulos snuck in one last goal to secure a 3-0 lead going into the final frame.

The third period consisted of a tight battle and lots of back-and-forth play between the teams. With 12 minutes remaining in regulation though, York's Julia Cuccia received a pass from Sydney Paulson and found the back of the net to round out the scoring.

Manager of Women's Hockey Operations and Head Coach Kelly Paton noted that she's hoping to generate more opportunities on the five-on-five play in the upcoming games and to "take a chance at the few second-chance pucks out front of the net on the powerplay."

Three Stars

Olivia MacMillan – Laurier Golden Hawks (Paton stated this game was her best since being a part of the program)

Emma Wedgewood – York Lions (28 saves in first OUA career start)

Sydney Paulson – York Lions (two assists)
