Despite late push, Golden Hawks fall to York

Box Score

WATERLOO, Ont. - Although they out-shot the York Lions 24-17 Saturday night in Toronto, the Golden Hawks were once again stumped by an outstanding performance from a rookie goaltender, as Carter Serhyenko led York to a 3-1 victory.

The Lions were active on the forecheck out of the gate and had frequent bursts of sustained pressure in the Laurier zone. Goaltender Christian Propp was characteristically strong in net, but Thomas Lacombe was able to open the scoring for York.

Laurier began to create some chances late in the period, with Matthew Zebedee and Evan Benwell combining on some pretty plays, but couldn't solve Serhyenko.

Ahead 1-0 heading into the second period, the Lions continued their solid play, and added to their lead on a rocket of a wrist shot from Michael Horon. Later in the frame, CJ Clarke made it 3-0 York.

The third period saw the purple and gold turn up the pressure offensively. They out-shot the Lions 10-5, and a few fantastic glove saves from Serhyenko were all that kept this from becoming a completely different game.

At the other end, Propp made another entry to his ever-growing highlight-reel as he slid across the crease for a pad save with Lions swarming the front of the net.

It wasn't until just over fifteen minutes into the period that Laurier finally converted on an opportunity. York's Kim Georgiev took a retaliatory penalty, leading to a Golden Hawks' power-play. This had been an area of struggle for Laurier all game, as they failed to score on their first six attempts.

Sam Rhodes put an end to both the power-play drought and Serhyenko's shutout as he buried a rebound to cut the lead to two. Head Coach Kevin Forrest elected to pull the goalie for the extra attacker down two goals late, but the Golden Hawks were unable to find the back of the net again.

With the loss, the Golden Hawks fall to 0-2 on the season.
