Golden Hawks have sights set on a deep playoff run

WATERLOO, Ont. - Heading into their first full season since 2019-2020, the Golden Hawks are looking to extend their playoff streak to seven seasons. They'll be backed by 2022 U SPORTS all-rookie Christian Propp in net, with team MVP Patrick Brown leading the charge offensively.

The returning core of veterans will be supported by a deep and exciting class of incoming recruits, which should give first-year Head Coach Kevin Forrest plenty of options as he and the team set their sights on a deep playoff run.

Starting in goal, Propp's backup this season will be Matthew Dunsmoor. The Guelph, Ont. native was drafted to the OHL by the Mississauga Steelheads in 2017, and played three seasons in the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL). He's an athletic goaltender with a high compete level who prides himself on being able to make unorthodox saves.

Dunsmoor isn't the only Steelheads draft pick joining the Golden Hawks in 2022, as Max Dodig will make his OUA debut after two seasons in the OHL. A physical forward who plays a strong two-way game, the Toronto native scored 25 points in 102 career games with Mississauga.

Joining Dodig at forward will be Cloverdale, B.C.'s Holden Kodak. Kodak, another two-way forward whose biggest strength is his hockey sense and vision, played parts of three seasons in the WHL. Most recently, he spent two seasons on the opposite coast with the Maritime Hockey League's (MJAHL) Truro Bearcats, where he scored 15 points in 17 playoff games en route to a finals appearance in 2022.

Kodak's MJAHL opponent, Luke Wilson, will now be lining up alongside him for Laurier. Wilson, a native of Bedford, N.S., played three seasons for the Valley Wildcats. He was the team's captain his last two seasons, and scored 45 points in 34 games in 2021-2022. Wilson is a more offensive-minded player whose creativity and goal scoring ability earned him a shot in the QMJHL, where he played parts of three seasons before joining the Wildcats.

The final addition at forward for Laurier is Innisfil, Ont.'s Matt Zebedee. Zebedee, an offensive-minded winger, is a five-year OJHL veteran, and ranked eighth in the league in scoring last season with 73 points in 52 games.

On defense, Bryce Kilbourne (London, Ont.) will be moving back to his home Province after splitting last season between Alberta (AJHL) and Manitoba's (MJHL) junior A circuits. A two-way defenseman who likes to block shots as well as jump into the rush offensively, Kilbourne had eight points in seventeen playoff games with the MJHL finalist Steinbach Pistons in 2022.

Also making the trip back east is Mississauga, Ont. native Colin Campbell. A two-way, puck-moving defenseman, Campbell played 23 career games with the OHL's Guelph Storm before playing last season with the British Columbia Hockey League's Cowichan Valley Capitals, where he scored 20 points in 33 games.

Finally, Flamborough, Ont.'s Ryan Mulholland will bring a high-tempo, shutdown game to the Golden Hawks' back end. Mulholland spent last season south of the border with the Philadelphia Hockey Club of the National Collegiate Development Conference, where he scored 13 points in 49 games.

The Golden Hawks drop the puck on the 2022/23 regular season with back-to-back games in the GTA; Friday October 14 at Toronto (7:00 pm) and Saturday October 15 at York (7:15 pm). Both games can be seen live on OUA.tv

Laurier opens the home portion of their schedule with back-to-back games against the Windsor Lancers on Friday October 21 and Saturday October 22. Both games are set to begin at 7:00 pm and tickets are available now at tickets.laurierathletics.com
