QUEBEC CITY (November 22, 2018) - Three members of the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men's football team were recognized as U SPORTS All-Canadians on Thursday evening as the national award winners and All-Canadians were celebrated at the annual Vanier Cup gala.
Receiver
Kurleigh Gittens Jr. of Ottawa, and defensive back
Will Amoah of Kitchener, Ont., were named First Team All-Canadians, with Gittens Jr. earning the nod at both receiver and returner, while defensive lineman
Trevaughan James of Whitby, Ont., was named to the second team.
It marks the fourth time in five seasons that three members of the purple and gold have earned All-Canadian recognition.
For Gittens Jr., he makes team history as he becomes the first Golden Hawk to be recognized as a First Team All-Canadian at multiple positions in the same season, one year after becoming the first Laurier player to be named to the first team and second team in the same year.
The dynamic fourth-year receiver had another outstanding season for Laurier in which he finished second in the country in receptions with 64 and fifth in receiving yards with 792. In the process, he set the OUA record for career receptions with 206 and became just the fifth player in U SPORTS history to eclipse 200 receptions in a career.
In the return game, Gittens Jr. finished second in the conference in punt return yards with 413 while adding 117 kickoff return yards to give him an OUA-best 1365 all-purpose yards for the season.
Joining Gittens Jr. as a First Team All-Canadian is Amoah, a third-year defensive back. The 2018 campaign was a breakout year for Amoah as he posted a career-best 27 tackles to go along with three pass breakups. Perhaps even more impressive was his five interceptions which tied him for second overall in the country this season.
Rounding out Laurier's All-Canadians is James who continued to be a dominating presence in the interior of the defensive line all year. He posted 17.5 tackles, including four for a loss, and 2.5 sacks while adding five pass breakups, the most of any defensive lineman in the OUA.
