On Wednesday, May 2, 2007, the Canadian Football League's (CFL) Canadian Draft took place and Wilfrid Laurier was represented with two athletes chosen. Golden Hawk defensive players
Justin Phillips and
Yannick Carter were selected fifth and twentieth overall, respectively.
Phillips was selected 5th overall in the first round by the Calgary Stampeders, a great accomplishment for this Golden Hawk, who has been playing football at Laurier since 2003. Carter, who also joined the Hawks in 2003, was chosen in the third round by the Saskatchewan Roughriders, who selected him with their 20th pick in the draft.
Both players have achieved much success during their time at Laurier. Phillips was a CIS Second Team All-Canadian in 2006 and an OUA First Team All-Star in 2006. In his past he was also an OUA Second Team All-Star in 2004. In 2005, Carter was a CIS First Team All-Canadian and an OUA First Team All-Star in 2006. He was also an OUA Second Team All-Star. Both were part of the 2004 Yates Cup Team and the National Championship Team in 2005. During their careers they have played in the Ontario Championship for all four years as well.
Phillips is considered to be the highest Golden Hawk selected on draft day since 1969, when Doug Strong was taken first overall by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, a considerable achievement for Phillips and Golden Hawks football.
"I and the entire Golden Hawk family are proud of them," commented Manager of Football Operations and Head Coach
Gary Jeffries. "As much as we would like to have them back for another year, they are both ready to step up for the next level."
Off to CFL camps this month along with Phillips and Carter is 2006 OUA Defensive Player of the Year,
Jesse Alexander, who will be joining former Golden Hawks Corey Grant and Donnie Ruiz at the Roughriders camp. Also competing for a roster spot will be OUA First Team offensive tackle
Scott Evans, who signed as a free agent onto the Argos this spring. At Argo camp, another Hawk will be entering his 7th season, Andre Talbot. The final two Hawks looking to continue their CFL careers are former All-Canadian defensive back Ian Logan with Winnipeg and Joel Wright with Montreal.
