TORONTO (CIS) – Golden Hawk offensive lineman Scott Evans became the second Golden Hawk in history to pick up the J.P. Metras award as the 2007 Canadian Interuniversity Sport major award winners were announced at the Fairmont Royal York hotel on Wednesday evening.
Evans, a graduate of Jacob Hespler Secondary School and a hometown student athlete from Cambridge, picked up the award as only the second Hawk in the 33 year existence of the award. Veron Stiliadis was the recipient in 1988.
The most recent Wilfrid Laurier CIS football award winner was Josh Alexander who won the Russ Jackson award in 2001 while in 1994 Bill Kubas won the Hec Crighton trophy for most outstanding national football athlete.
The six-foot-seven, 295-pound tackle, who never missed a game in his four seasons at Laurier, was one of the main reasons the 7-1 Hawks led the OUA and ranked third in the nation this fall with 240.4 rushing yards per outing. Running back Ryan Lynch was the main beneficiary, setting a single-season school record with 170 carries and becoming only the third Hawk in history to rush for over 1000 yards (1029).
Signed as a free agent by the CFL's Toronto Argonauts in January, Evans was named to the second all-Canadian team last year and now is Laurier's only representative on the first team.
"Scott has got all of the attributes, both physical and mental, and the intangibles to play this game well," complimented Laurier Manager of Football Operations and Head Coach Gary Jeffries. "He is a versatile athlete who has great feet and can move with his size and perform at both the run and pass blocks."
Also honoured at the event was Presidents' Trophy nominee Anthony Maggiacomo (Cambridge, Ont.) representing Ontario stand-up defensive players. Maggiacomo along with Taurean Allen (Etobicoke, Ont.) were named to the second all-Canadian team.
