GUELPH – The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks finished the 2005 regular football season perfect once again, defeating the Guelph Gryphons 47-26. The perfect season is only the second in Golden Hawk season, with the other taking place last season.

"We're very proud of what we've accomplished thus far," said Manager of Football Operations and Head Coach Gary Jeffries. "We do recognize there is still a lot of hard work to do to accomplish our post season goals."

Norland's Nick Cameron and Sarnia's Brian Devlin also added their names to the Golden Hawk record books.

Running back Nick Cameron scored a touchdown in the game and later surpassed the 1,000 season yard mark. The fifth year back is only the third athlete in Golden Hawk history to reach that mark. Cameron finished the game with 20 carries for 155 yards and a touchdown.

"It's an honour to be listed among the best in Golden Hawk history," said Cameron. "Rushing for 1000 yards isn't something I could have done without the support of the offensive line. Those guys have played well this season."

Brian Devlin added to his previous three Golden Hawk records moving his name to the top of the most field goals in the regular season. Devlin finished with 17, two more then Jerry Gulyes (1978) and Spiros Anatasakis (1991), the previous record holders.

Quarterback Ryan Pyear finished off his regular season with a five TDs. The fifth year Belleville native finished the season with 19 TD passes. On the day the pivot was 19 for 28 performance for a total of 262 yards before backups Dante Luciani and Jamie Partington came in to finish off the game.

"Finishing undefeated for the second straight season feels great," said Pyear. "Now we prepare for our real season, the post season."

Devlin opened scoring for the Hawks with a 28 yard field goal, Cameron added his eleventh TD of the season only minutes later putting the Hawks up by 10. Andrew Oosterhuis scored Guelph's first major of the game on a communication error by WLU's punt returners. The purple and gold responded with 30 points through the following 17 minutes including two by Bryon Hickey. Also scoring majors were Andrew Agro and Andrew Baechler.

The Golden Hawks stopped Guelph's rushing game, allowing only 26 yards on 14 carries. The Laurier defense also picked off QB Justin Dunk four times. Yannick Carter and Dave Montoya also put some pressure on the rookie starter, as they sacked him for a combined 4.5 times.

Laurier's offense racked up 698 yards in the performance with a fairly even balance of rushing and passing over a total of 35 first downs. The Gryphons managed 14.

The #3 CIS ranked Golden Hawks (8-0) now have a weekend off, as they prepare for the OUA Semi-Final at University Stadium. Their opponents will be determined next weekend in the #4 vs #5 OUA Quarter Final game where Windsor travels to McMaster.
