Laurier Football is extremely excited to announce the commitment of three outstanding local student athletes to attend Wilfrid Laurier University and play football for the Golden Hawks in fall 2004.
Running Back Joel Gooding from Preston Secondary School in Cambridge was a 1st Team All-Star and the WCSSAA (Waterloo County Secondary School Athletic Association) Football Player of the Year in 2002. At Preston, Joel developed into one of the premiere running backs in Ontario, at 6'0 190lbs; Joel can beat his opponents with both speed and power. Joel will be entering the Bachelor of Arts program at WLU.
Steve Cormack played all over the field in 2003 for the St. David's Celtics. He was recognized as a First Team All-Star at Defensive Tackle, in addition to playing fullback and offensive line. Due to his versatility he was chosen as a finalist for the WCSSAA Player of the Year. At 6'1 260, Steve is extremely athletic for his size. The Hawks will look to Steve to help fill the void left in the Defensive Line with the graduation of OUA All-Stars,
Justin Shakell,
Tony Bretney and
Josh Alexander. Steve plans to study History at Laurier.
Ryan Lynch plays much bigger than his 5'9 180lb frame. As a running back with Waterloo Collegiate, Ryan was selected as a First Team WCSSAA All-Star, helping the Vikings to the final game once again. Ryan is following in the footsteps of many great players from WCI to play for the Golden Hawks, the most recent being OUA All-Star defensive back
Ian Logan. Ryan will be entering the Economics program at WLU.
