Toronto, ON – Today Canadian Hockey announced its Women's National Team's roster of twenty-two players for the upcoming 2004 IIHF Women's World Hockey Championship in Halifax and Dartmouth, NS. Playing in a defensive role once again for the National team is former Golden Hawk
Cheryl Pounder (Mississauga, ON).
Cheryl Pounder is a graduate of Laurier's Kinesiology program and played Golden Hawk hockey throughout her academic career at Wilfrid Laurier. Pounder was pivotal in capturing Laurier's first OUA Championship title in 1998-1999. Cheryl was also a four-time OUA All-Star, team rookie of the year in 1995, and team MVP in 1997.
More recently, she has helped Canada achieve the last three world titles, the 2002 Olympic gold medal and the gold medal at the 2002 Four Nations Cup. Pounder also plays for the Toronto Aeros, a team in the National Women's Hockey League.
Also named to the team is Laurier MBA Student Becky Kellar. Kellar completed her undergraduate degree at Brown University, where she played hockey for Brown's varsity team.
Team Canada's roster consists of two goaltenders, six defencemen, and 12 forwards. The players on Canada's 2004 World Championship roster have combined to win 53 World Championship gold medals, 16 Olympic gold medals and 8 Olympic silver medals and have played a total of 1401 international games with Canada's National Women's Team.
