Peter Baxter announced that long-time Golden Hawk
Gary Jeffries has been appointed to the position of Manager of Football Operations & Head Coach. Jeffries succeeds
Rick Zmich who resigned in January 2003.
Gary Jeffries, becomes the fifth Golden Hawk Football field boss in Laurier's storied history of football success.
"Gary brings a passion for Laurier that is un-paralleled, and will be a driving force to develop successful student-athletes, coaches, and most importantly, people", states
Peter Baxter. The athletes mirror Baxter's thoughts, "Coach Jeff has a passion and commitment to winning and a love for his players" expressed 5th Year OUA All-Star,
Justin Shakell, adding, "He is fun to play for!"
Jeffries has been a member of the Golden Hawk football coaching staff for over 25 years that include 15 trips to the Ontario Championship, and has developed 25 athletes to be recognized as All-Canadians, while coordinating the top rated defence in the country six times.
"Being named as the leader of the Golden Hawks Football squad fulfills a lifelong dream, and I am honoured to be in charge of building a new and dynamic coaching staff", stated Jeffries. Following 17 years as a Defensive Coordinator September 2003 will mark Jeffries' first full season as the head field general.
Jeffries' appointment will provide to the revitalization of one of the premier football programs in the country. "I'm excited about the coaching staff we are putting in place, the veteran players who will return to the fold, and the recruits we have committed to come to Laurier in the fall!" stressed Jeffries.
Jeffries came to Laurier in 1970 as an athlete, and was an All-Star defensive back for the Hawks. Upon graduation Gary was drafted to the CFL and also pursued a baseball career in the Detroit Tigers Organization. Following his athletic career he joined the Laurier Athletic Department in 1972 and has had various roles, but has always found a home with Football.
Considered the ultimate Golden Hawk, he expressed this honour of being named to this new position by saying, "I intend to treat this post with the respect it deserves!"
It is expected that a significant announcement with respect to additional coaching staff appointments will be made in the not too distant future.
