[Waterloo] – Head football coach and Offensive Coordinator Rick Zmich announced his resignation today after 12 and half years with the Laurier Golden Hawks.

Zmich, a former Hec-Crighton award winner and the 1995 CIS Coach of the Year leaves the Golden Hawks with a 42 and 26 record. He was the Offensive Coordinator in 1991 when the Golden Hawks won their only Vanier Cup.

"I think it's time to move on," said Zmich. "These are a terrific group of athletes and I believe this team has what it takes to win a Vanier Cup!"

While Zmich is disappointed to be leaving his players, he is looking forward to taking some time off to spend with his family. Zmich is to be married this summer.

"Rick has provided Laurier with 12 great years of leadership and dedication," said Wilfrid Laurier University President, Dr. Bob Rosehart. "His players are some of the best in the country, they are a tribute to his skill as a coach and mentor."

Peter Baxter, Athletic Director, expressed his appreciation for Zmich's effort and dedication during his years with the program. "He was committed to his players on and off the field and he made sure they were successful in the classroom and on the field. For that and more we would like to thank him."

Baxter has appointed Gary Jeffries, Golden Hawk Defensive Coordinator as interim Head Coach. Jeffries has consistently fielded one of the top ranked defenses within the OUA and CIS.

Baxter stated that after consultation with key stakeholders within the football program, a process to determine Laurier's next leader of the Golden Hawks will be announced in the coming weeks.
