April 9th proved to be yet another landmark day in Golden Hawk Athletics history. Laurier graduate,
Cheryl Pounder won her second Women's Hockey World Championship gold medal.
Throughout the Championship tournament Cheryl contributed many minutes of strong defense and has shown herself to be one of team Canada's top defensive players. During Gold medal play, Cheryl played a large part in Canada's overtime win over the United States. This was Cheryl's third world championship win and team Canada's sixth victory in a row!
During her time as a Golden Hawk, Cheryl was a four time OUA All-star, team rookie of the year in 1995, and team MVP in 1997. Pounder aided in Laurier's OUA Championship win in 1998 and has since graduated with a degree in Physical Education/Kinesiology.
Outside of playing for the National team, Cheryl is in her 8th season with the Beatrice Aeros. Her minor hockey career was played in Mississauga.
Cheryl is continually improving her skills and looks to play a predominant role in the future of Canadian Women's hockey.
