For the first time, "Beyond February" features the entrepreneurial ventures of one of our current student-athletes: Tristan Miller.
Miller excelled at basketball and football at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Secondary School in Milton. At St. FX, Miller was coached by former Laurier quarterback and Hec Crighton winner Bill Kubas.
The defensive back fought hard in his first couple of seasons with the Golden Hawks to even earn a spot on the dress roster but, last year, he was a starter for the Yates Cup Champion Golden Hawks and was even selected to play in the U SPORTS East-West Bowl.
A sociology major, Miller’s dream is to play football at the professional level, but even if that doesn’t work out, he has already established himself in the business community.
He started cutting hair in his parents’ garage when he was 17. At Laurier, he quickly became the team barber for the football and basketball teams.
Through connections with another former Laurier player who also became a barber (Daishane Johnson) and a former Hamilton Ti-Cat/current Golden Hawks coach (Mike Daly), Miller became the team barber for the Ti-Cats and the Toronto Argonauts.
He’s also had opportunities to cut hair at an NFL Rookie Camp for the Green Bay Packers and for NBA Summer League teams.
Miller’s brand is called "The Locker Room by TreyFadez’". His brand focuses on mobile barbering, providing grooming services to professional athletes with a team of barbers across North America. His recent clients include NBA superstar RJ Barrett and former Super Bowl Champion Mecole Hardman.
In early 2025, Miller started working with the StartUp Lab at Laurier, which supports young entrepreneurs. He was selected to participate in the Pitch Competition and was among the top six finalists, winning the Student Choice Vote and receiving the $1,000 award that went along with it.
Miller’s achievements on and off the field make him a cut above the rest.
