Former Laurier running back Lance Freeman is probably the only former or current Golden Hawk born in Zimbabwe.

His family moved to Denver when he was eight years old and before coming to play Laurier in 2011, he went to school and played football at Cederbrae Collegiate in Toronto.

Unfortunately, Freeman was seriously injured on his third day of training camp as a rookie. He tore his anterior cruciate ligament, which took him out for the entire season.

On September 15, 2012, Freeman made a triumphant return to the field, rushing for 100 yards and scoring two touchdowns in a 24-20 win over York.

He played seven games in 2012 and again in 2014. Due to injuries, 2013 was another write-off.  Freeman received his Bachelor’s Degree in Art Studies from Laurier in 2016.

While with the Golden Hawks, Freeman became very interested in art, photography and video creation. Even during his playing career, he would use these talents to create, edit, and produce videos for the team and his teammates.

Soon after, he created his own small business, Freeman Productions.

In 2016, he was hired as a video production assistant and junior video content coordinator for the Toronto Argonauts. Since then, his career as a visual artist/video content creator has led him to work for the Toronto Blue Jays, the Jays Care Foundation, Arc’teryx, and CAMH Foundation.

In 2024, Freeman’s painting talents were on full display as part of the Toronto Blue Jays honouring the legacy of Jackie Robinson.
