Beyond February: Jahmeeks Beckford
By: Dave Morrissey
Jahmeeks Beckford was an incredible multi-sport student-athlete who attended Eastwood Collegiate in Kitchener.
He was a regional all-star and the team’s MVP in football.
He attended Fanshawe College in London where he received an advanced diploma in graphic design.
In 2005, he became a Golden Hawk and played defensive back for Laurier for three seasons.
In his first season, he was a member of the Vanier Cup Championship team.
In his final season, he was an OUA all-star and graduated with a degree in communications studies in 2008.
Beckford has given back to the community in many ways. Coaching has been a big part of his life. In the past, working closely with Laurier's defensive coordinator, Ron Van Moerkerke, he coached defensive backs at Laurier. He also coached the Tri-City Outlaws.
Currently, he coaches the U14 Cambridge Lions football team.
It isn’t just through football that Beckford shows his commitment to service. His chosen vocation is also proof of that. Beckford is the Youth Resource Lead with Carizon Family & Community Services. In this role, he has played a key part in helping local children and families.
He’s also played an important role with the SWRIL (Smart Waterloo Region Innovation Lab) which encourages youth to create and expand their ideas.
