Beyond February: Anton Matthews
By: Dave Morrissey
Anton Matthews was a star quarterback for David Suzuki Secondary School in Brampton.
Upon joining Laurier in 2017, he quickly made the switch to wide receiver and managed to make the dress squad twice in his rookie season.
He played for the Golden Hawks from 2017 to 2019 and in 2021. He cites Laurier’s 53-50 triple overtime regular season win over Waterloo in 2019 as the most memorable moment of his career.
Upon completing his playing career, Matthews joined the coaching staff working with the wide receivers. His primary function is to prepare the scout team players to give our starting defenders "good looks" of their next opponent.
He’s also been the offensive coordinator for the U16 Cambridge Lions.
Matthews earned a degree in biology at Laurier and after completing that, he continued his education at BizTech College in Mississauga, gaining the necessary qualifications to become a paramedic, which is the industry where he’s currently employed.
Paramedic and Coach: two entirely different jobs fueled by a passion for helping people. That is Anton Matthews!
