Beyond February: Levondre Gordon
By: Dave Morrissey
Levondre Gordon was a running back for Laurier from 2015 to 2019.
In his rookie season, he only had five carries playing behind standout Dillon Campbell. In his second year, he led the nation in yards per carry backing up another great running back in Eric Guiltinan.
Replacing an injured Guiltinan as the starter in the Yates Cup, Gordon responded with an amazing effort, rushing for 164 yards (including a 43-yard touchdown run in the second quarter) on only 18 attempts to help the Golden Hawks to a memorable 43-40 comeback Yates Cup victory over Western.
It was another long Gordon run late in the game that put Laurier in excellent field goal position to win the game on a field goal by Nathan Mesher.
The native of Mississauga, Ont. surpassed 900 yards rushing in each of his final three seasons, topping 1,000 in 2019. He was an OUA second-team All-Star in 2018. In 2019, he lead the nation in rushing and was a first-team OUA All-Star, a first-team U SPORTS All-Canadian, a U SPORTS Academic All-Canadian, and Laurier's team MVP.
He was the Laurier Football Player of the Game eleven times and the Laurier Athlete of the Week three times during his career. He finished his career as the second-leading rusher in school history and he most certainly will one day be enshrined in the Laurier Hall of Fame.
Gordon was a selfless, quiet leader who played with numerous injuries but never missed a game. Upon graduation, he attended the Ontario Police College and, for the past couple of years, he has served his community of Mississauga as a Constable with the Peel Regional Police. Supporting his community, being a role model, and being an agent of change are the guiding principles behind this noble career choice.
