Beyond February: Kojo Millington

Kojo Millington family photoKojo Millington was a student-athlete and defensive lineman for the Golden Hawks from 1995 to 2000. He had a tremendous amount of success on the field. Not only was he a first-team OUA All-Star and CIS All-Canadian, but he was also named the OUAA's Outstanding Lineman.

In 2000, Millington played in the East-West Shrine Bowl featuring fellow senior student-athletes, including those from the NCAA, like Tom Brady.

He was a fourth-round draft pick of the Toronto Argonauts and had a brief career in the CFL with British Columbia.

Millington was named to Laurier’s Team of the Century in 2011.

After his stellar football career, Millington entered the education field, teaching in secondary schools within the Peel District School Board.

A few years ago, he switched over to the Waterloo District School Board and started working in elementary schools. Recently, he was promoted to vice principal.

“I wanted to assist in moving this school board and its stakeholders forward from an equity lens," said Millington. "I’m the only Black male administrator in the elementary panel. Until there is more representation, the stereotypes and biases that consume our society will continue to affect our education system.

"My goal is that kids continue to experience less racism and biases. This will take acknowledgment, humility, and reflection to create change. Our kids deserve this.”
